Tracking of people and goods in their movements

MyBee is a software product that allows operators to monitor people and goods in their relative movements, triggering in real time the presence or absence of elements in the group. A MyBee system, in its simplest version, consists of a series of small nodes and a mobile handheld device used by the operator for monitoring. The nodes must first be registered with an automatic procedure and can then be monitored and queried. In more complex scenarios additional devices can be used to create, for example, reference markers for monitoring items within a predefined perimeter.

MyBee can be conveniently engaged for the safety of groups of individuals in their movements or their location within defined perimeters. In these cases, each person is equipped with an electronic gadget with network node capabilities. Consider, for example, children on a trip under the responsibility of one or more adults or people with physical or neurological disruption in their travels. Even if the needs are only to improve the organization of trips MyBee can be used with great advantage, for example in guided tours for tourists. The same is valid for goods and animals. Think, for example, to valuable devices in public locations, just like hospitals, in which tracking of expensive equipments may benefit their management.

MyBee is designed to maximize ease of use and battery life of portable devices (sensors and handheld). The radio signal power, the group polling frequency and how to report to the operator can be configured. Since each node of the network has sufficient intelligence to apply the sophisticated detection and synchronization algorithms developed by EDALab, the operator's handheld can reach nodes not directly connected to it, thus monitoring the group in a wide area.

Applicazioni WSN

In general, an application of wireless sensor networks consists of a set of basic elements such as:

  1. Network of sensors

with minimal electronic sensors to reduce energy consumption, but still able to perform simple calculations
  2. Wireless communication protocol

such as 802.15.4 protocol, designed to exchange small amount of data with low power consumption
  3. Communication middleware/firmware

running on the nodes of the network developed to characterize the system and achieve the desired behavior
  4. A software application

that enables the interaction of the system operator or end user. This part include software tools for configuration and installation, control interfaces and data mining.

The distributed nature of a system based on wireless sensor networks offers great flexibility in the management of information, and hence the possibility of using different types of devices in data management:

  1. Mobile terminal:

it is useful to show instant messages about the network in dynamic scenarios where, for example, the operator itself is moving or rapid actions are required.
  2. Desktop Operator Workstations:

it is used in scenarios where the sensors are controlled from a central location, usually remote and accessible by devices called "network bridges", that allow to convey information in a variety of networks such as ethernet or otherwise.
  3. Network Appliance:

it is employed for the centralized storage of information in order to make quantitative and qualitative evaluations over time, related to the system itself or the process in which the system helps.
